Hey ya all
Tomorrow night ( Wednesday ) I intend to stub out my LAST cigarette, Im too scared to post how long ive been a smoker but its a bloody long time and I wanna live.
I know there are stop smoking forums and I intend to join one but I thought I would ask you guys and gals for any tips or encouragement you can give me. I don't expect it to be easy but with the support of my family, friends, cyber friends and anyone who is prepared to listen to me I reckon I can make it!
I know smoking is stupid and pointless, not to mention dangerous, but that doesn't make it any easier to stop, however I am determined. The more people I tell the greater the shame I will feel if I should fail.
Anyway, thanks for reading this. wish me luck.
Cheers

Hey ! great decision Wurble!
I't been about 3 months since I stopped smoking... I'm 26 and have been a huge smoker for about 10 years.So I can tell ! wink.gif
I think the most important thing that has to come to your mind when you want to smoke a cigarette is "Do you want to make yourself good, or do you want to hurt yourself?" Just ask that question to the deepest of your self... and you'll of course choose life...

Just be aware that it's going to be physically hard during the first 4 or 5 days. So just be patient, like when you are sick or have the flu, and wait for your recovery... and be aware that during that time smoking ONE cigarette makes you go back to the starting point.

Try to avoid coffee, alcohol, or any situation that is linked to cigarette during these first few days.

Go practicing, or go swimming, this helps your body producing endorphins that can put you in good mood and feel less painful.

Good luck man!!

What a great decision Wurble!!

I never smoked, just like TTB. I tried it a couple of times but I just didn't like it.

Anyway, I hope you'll be able to quit. But I'm sure you are smile.gif
There are not only bad stories from quitters. I also heared some stories of people who just quit and never did it again with not that much trouble.

just think of you kids who don't have to live in that horrible smell anymore. My mother smokes and I hate it when she does it in the house. Can't make her stop unfortunately.

!!!GO WURBLE!!!

Hey Wurble!

That's a fabulous idea! I stopped 22 years ago, but I chose a time before I was too addicted. I also have a very strong will, and a non-addictive personality!

The real positives are for your health, and the health of those around you. Also, food and drink start to taste so much better.

Not knowing you personally, I don't know if you have an addictive personality or not. If you don't then with support and will power you will succeed. If you have got an addictive personality then what you need to do is change smoking for a more positive addiction. My mate Glyn took up rock climbing as his new obsession, and he's been smoke-free for 6 years or so now with no desire to go back!

Good luck mate. And when it gets tricky, talk to someone about it, don't let the desire fester and grow in the back of your mind.

Hey Wurble,

that's a great plan of you. I'm thinking of the same thing to do (but i'm such a weak bastard, i don't think that i'm able to). I went to the doctor this afternoon, because the left side of my face didn't move like it should do. I was scared to death for some severe problems with my brains (is it some kind of tia? i didn't know). Luckely it was just a virusinfection to my face nerve, so in about 6 to 8 weeks my face should work normal again.

However, the doctor recommended me to stop smoking because of the chance for real problems in future sad.gif

Okay Wurble, I'm a smoker, I still am, but I want to congratulate on your decision to quit this nasty, filthy habit.

If you're doing it for health purposes there are other things you can smoke which are far less unhealthy in 'crisis situations'. e.g. cigars

By this I mean, most smokers smoke because it's just a habit. Lots of them think they are addicted to nicotine, but in fact they are addicted to smoking in some places/situations.
One of the most well known situations is when going out.

I like to add my situations as well, as I'm planning to quit as well, when I'm a bit older. tongue.gif

- Walking from my car to the train station in the morning to go to work
- Walking from the train station to the building where I work
- sitting in front of the computer @ home
- 9h30 in the morning @ work (after 1h30 of work)
- after meals
- after a cup of coffee
And there's others of course.

I will not tell anyone of the health risks, as thais would sound a bit hypocrite from a smoker. And besides, you all know how your lungs look like after years of smoking.

So imho, the best way to quit is to control the circumstances in which you smoke, even if it involves tackling them one by one, dealing with one situation per day.

So, I don't believe in nicotine being that addictive, but as David stated before : there are people who develop an addiction and people who don't, and I for sure am not an addictive smoker, but a situation smoker.

That's it, I'll tell you when I'll quit. smile.gif

Way to go eh!

Now this may seem stupid as heck but I never touched a cig! And I ain't plannin on, it's something that I'm kinda proud. I do smoke pot often so I'm not really a non-smoker but I never touched tobacco. Lol I did sometimes feel like, but I never did. ohmy.gif

And if you have kids I think well it's a good reason to stop, it's so bad for their health... and yours damnit. My father smokes 3/4x20 a day so you can guess how fucked up he'll be soon enough. Not to mention the money darn.

Well good luck! Hope ya feel better soon wink.gif

Hey Wurble,
ive been a smoker for 10 years and i quit and if i can everyone can biggrin.gif
ive tried to do it on will power but that didnt work for me
i tried reading that book of erm... alan carr? and lighted a cigarette just as easily after reading it huh.gif
even when i got pregnant i couldnt stop sad.gif i smoked less but i couldnt quit it completely
so after a few months i really wanted to stop and i went to a guy that said he could make people stop by pushing under their feet blink.gif
he told me not to drink cafeine for two weeks, so no tea, coffee or coke, and drink loads of water.
i still dont know if what he did worked but fact is i quit after it and i havent missed it at all, and that is amazing for me!!! i even smoked pot after it but i still dont miss smoking at all. so maybe you should try to avoid cafeine and drink loads of water, maybe that helps.

anyway, wish you luck and i hope you make it!!

I intend to stub out my LAST cigarette

I quitted smoking once. Was very proud but it didn't last very long. I started smoking again.

Last week a friend of mine told me about his dad. His dad used to smoke like hell. Now he is dying. He hardly can't breathe. So he needs to be operated. Doctors can't because his heart is too weak. So operating will kill him within the month and not operating will kill him too because of his weak heart. So the man lies in his bed ... waiting for his dead.

When I heard the story ... a bit later I smoked another cigarette. Thinking of it ... it just didn't taste anymore. And last week I stopped smoking. Went to the pub this weekend. And I just didn't want a cigarette. The story keeps reminding me how bad smoking can be.

This story helps me even though I don't know the dad. So maybe this story will help you too. Just think about it everytime you feel you gonna need a smoke.

Anyway, I wish you good luck! And hope you can resist the O so mighty Cigarette.

With all the support on the board, I'm sure you'll make it!
I'm proud of you, I'm a hopeless smoker myself, and I wish I had your determination.... Keep ur head up cool.gif

wurble- 10-11-2005
WOW! What a great response, Thank you all very much for your advice and encouragement.
I am VERY determined so I hope this time will be IT, no more cigarettes!
Your advice was great and some of the stories were powerful stuff, ( especially Arwens, it really makes you think! )
I will probably post in this thread from time to time just to say how im doin or let off steam when the going gets tough,( please feel free to ignore the rantings of an addict ) .
It means a lot to me to get messages of encouragement from people I haven't met yet, ( or a kick up the ass from those I have ) the Internet can be a great place eh?
Thanks again, I feel more confident already.
Cheers
